Chaia is a trendy counter-service taco joint specializing in vegetarian and vegan options. Formerly a hit on the local farmers market scene, it recently opened up a permanent location on Grace Street, adding to a long list of fantastic restaurants in Georgetown. Inside, a minimalist white tile and wood panel aesthetic keeps a calm energy about the long lines and hustling taco-makers.
Chaia is located just a five-minute walk across Waters Alley from the Graham Georgetown. Guests looking for a scenic route can walk right along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and get there in the same amount of time. This centrally located restaurant in Georgetown is also a short walk from a bevvy of designer boutiques on M Street and gorgeous river views at the Washington Harbour.
What to Try
The tacos at Chaia are unlike most others, especially considering that none of them contain meat. Our favorites include the Garlicky Greens, which comes with cotija cheese, smoky tomatillo salsa and pickled radishes. Another can’t fail is the creamy kale and potato topped off with pepper jack, poblano cream, pickled onions and a house green sauce. Those looking for some protein are always welcome to add on a free-range egg.
Closing out your meal at Chaia, there’s one unforgettable dessert option in the seven spice chocolate bar, combining hints of chilli with dark sweets. Those looking for a refreshment or a pick up can also indulge in an Indonesian sumatra brewed coffee or iced hibiscus tea.
